Causes of Livestock Infected with FMD, is it safe for human consumption?
Outbreaks of mouth and nail disease (PMK) are increasing ahead of the 2022 Eid al-Adha sacrifice.
A veterinarian and livestock expert at the Bogor Agricultural Institute (IPB) Supratikno said that as of 27 May 2022, the number of cattle infected with FMD in Indonesia had reached more than 10,000 heads.
Seeing this, Tikno asked the community to participate in helping prevent the spread of the FMD outbreak that infects livestock, especially livestock that will be used as sacrificial animals.
According to him, the public needs to know in advance what causes livestock to be infected with FMD, in order to prevent the spread of FMD outbreaks in livestock.
Virus spread
Quoted from the Kompas.com which aired on Saturday (14/5/2022), FMD is caused by Aphthovirus from the Picornaviridae .
This virus is estimated to have spread to about 77 percent of the livestock population in Africa, the Middle East, Asia, and parts of South America
"If the virus has entered a place, if it is not immediately locked . , then the virus will spread everywhere and infect infected livestock," said Tikno when contacted by Kompas.com via online on Tuesday (7/6/2022) ).
He further explained that the virus that causes FMD can spread very quickly, either from direct or indirect contact.
"In direct contact, it can be directly exposed to the animal, if not directly, it is through the air and equipment related to infected animals," he said.
The bad impact of PMK on humans
Tikno said that FMD can only be transmitted to animals, and does not have a bad impact on humans when consuming livestock meat that is affected by FMD.
However, if the virus that causes FMD spreads, the decline in livestock population due to FMD will have an impact on human survival.
"If this is left unchecked, many livestock will die, many will miscarry, the livestock population will decline, so we are increasingly dependent on imported meat," he said.
Not only that, the spread of the FMD outbreak will also have an impact on economic aspects, especially for animal traders.
"If the virus has spread, we cannot refuse imported meat from the origin of the outbreak, because we are also affected by the epidemic," he explained.
"On the other hand, we also cannot export meat to every country, let alone to countries that have not been affected by the epidemic," he said.
