Characteristics of Sacrificial Animals Infected with FMD, Fever Until Nails come off

A veterinarian and livestock expert at the Bogor Agricultural Institute (IPB) Supratikno said, there were two categories of animals infected with the fungus and nail disease (PMK) outbreak, namely those that showed symptoms and did not show symptoms.

Animals with FMD symptoms are easy to identify so that anticipatory measures can be taken to prevent transmission.

Meanwhile, animals that do not show symptoms of FMD are considered more dangerous because they can transmit the virus without realizing it.

The characteristics of livestock infected with FMD can be seen from their health condition. In general, infected livestock will show symptoms such as fever with a body temperature above 41 degrees Celsius.

In addition, the cattle's body looks limp and blisters appear on the mouth, gums, nose, and nostrils.

"Cattle infected with FMD will usually smack uncomfortably, so they produce a lot of saliva," said Tikno when contacted by The Newbie Food via online on Tuesday (7/6/2022).

Tikno said that the act of squeezing carried out by livestock aims to produce saliva, the saliva plays a role in eliminating the virus that is in the mouth of the livestock.

"The virus survives at a normal pH and can die at an alkaline or acidic pH. The saliva of livestock (especially cows) is alkaline, so it can kill the virus," he said.

If the virus has started to spread to other parts of the body, blisters will appear on the mouth, feet, mammary glands, nipples, nails, the part between the nail and the skin, and can even cause the animal's nails to fall off.

"The symptoms can vary, if the goats, sheep, and buffaloes are not too severe, while the cows are severe," he said.

Although the symptoms of FMD appear to be quite severe, Tikno said that cattle such as cattle from Asia are considered relatively more resistant and strong against FMD outbreaks .

Especially when compared to imported cattle such as limousines and simentals.

The FMD outbreak that infects livestock, especially the livestock for the Eid al-Adha sacrifice, said Tikno, that there is no cure. Usually cattle will recover on their own, depending on the severity.
